On-Premise Phone Systems - Full Control, No Cloud Dependency

Some businesses need their phone system to keep running even if the internet has a bad day, or need call data to stay on-site for compliance reasons. Byteway installs and maintains on-premise PBX systems built for exactly that.

What is an On-Premise Phone System?

Why Some Melbourne Businesses Still Choose On-Premise PBX?

An on-premise phone system is a PBX unit installed and hosted at your business location, rather than run from a provider’s cloud infrastructure. You own the hardware, and your call routing, voicemail and data stay on-site.

Australia’s copper PSTN network has now been fully decommissioned, and Telstra has retired the legacy ISDN and bundled voice products that many older on-premise systems relied on. That doesn’t mean on-premise is dead. It means an on-premise PBX today connects over SIP trunking through your internet connection instead of a physical phone line. For businesses with strict data residency requirements, unreliable internet in the past, or a large call centre already invested in on-site hardware, on-premise still makes sense. It just needs to be set up correctly for how phone networks actually work now.

What’s included

What Byteway's On-Premise
Phone Service Covers?

Installation, SIP trunking, and ongoing maintenance, all handled by a team that understands the PSTN shutdown isn’t optional to plan around.

PBX Installation and Configuration

Hardware sized to your call volume, configured for your extensions, call groups and voicemail routing.

SIP Trunking Migration

Since PSTN and legacy ISDN are no longer available, your on-premise system connects through SIP trunking over your internet connection. Byteway configures this correctly the first time.

Ongoing Maintenance and Support

Hardware fails eventually. Byteway keeps spare capacity planning and support response built into the service, not billed as a surprise callout.
The Byteway difference

Why Byteway, Not Just Another
PBX Installer

Plenty of installers can rack a PBX box. Fewer understand that the network it plugs into has fundamentally changed in the past two years.

Local team

Australian-Based Support

Melbourne-based technicians who show up for hardware callouts, not a remote helpdesk reading a ticket.

Complete stack

IT + Telco Under One Roof

Your phone system, internet and IT support managed together, so a call quality issue gets diagnosed against the whole network, not just the handset.

Transparent

Clear Pricing, No Surprises

Itemised hardware and support costs upfront, no vague “PBX package” pricing.

Proactive

We Catch Problems Before You Notice

Hardware monitoring flags failing components before they take your phones down.

Frequently Asked Questions About On- Premise Phone Systems

01

Is on-premise still viable now that PSTN has been shut down in Australia?

Yes. On-premise PBX systems now connect through SIP trunking over your internet connection instead of a copper PSTN line. The hardware and control stay on-site, but the underlying connection method has changed, and it needs to be configured for that.

02

How much does an on-premise phone system cost?

Cost depends on the number of handsets, call volume, and whether existing hardware can be reused. Byteway provides a fixed quote after assessing your current setup.

03

What happened to my old phone system if it used ISDN or PSTN lines?

If your system relied on ISDN or a direct PSTN line, that connection method no longer exists. The system either needs to be migrated to SIP trunking or replaced. Byteway can assess whether your existing hardware is worth migrating or whether a new system makes more sense.

04

Why choose on-premise over hosted PBX?

On-premise makes sense if you have strict data residency requirements, a large call centre already invested in on-site hardware, or a preference for owning the equipment outright. For most other businesses, hosted PBX is simpler and cheaper. See our Hosted PBX / Cloud VoIP page for the full comparison.

05

Do I need a long-term contract for Byteway's on-premise service?

No. Byteway service arrangements are flexible and month-to-month, even for hardware-based systems.

06

How quickly can Byteway respond if our on-premise system fails?

Hardware faults are treated as urgent given the operational impact of losing phones entirely. Byteway's local Melbourne team prioritises same-day response for critical outages.
